Defence Ministry Partners Science, Technology Sector to Strengthen National Security

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, has held talks with the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, on building closer collaboration to address energy and technological needs within the country’s defence sector.

The meeting took place at Ship House in Abuja, where both ministers discussed ways to deepen cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and agencies under the science and technology ministry to support research, innovation, and technological development for national security.

During the meeting, Musa emphasized the need for stronger synergy among government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), stressing that innovation and homegrown technology are crucial to tackling Nigeria’s security and development challenges.

A major focus of the discussion was the issue of electricity supply to military facilities. Musa noted that many barracks across the country struggle with unreliable power, affecting both operational efficiency and the welfare of personnel.

He suggested that collaboration with agencies such as the Energy Commission of Nigeria could help develop sustainable energy solutions for military installations.

“Stable energy supply is essential for operational efficiency, improved living conditions for personnel, and the effective functioning of military institutions,” the defence minister said, adding that partnerships in the energy sector could support alternative power solutions for defence establishments.

Musa also reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to working closely with the scientific community in areas including research, innovation, capacity building, and energy development.

Responding, Udeh expressed readiness for stronger cooperation between both ministries. He was accompanied by heads of several agencies under his supervision, including the National Space Research and Development Agency, the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, and the Energy Commission of Nigeria.

The agencies’ directors-general outlined possible areas of technical support and innovation that could strengthen defence operations and enhance national security capabilities.

Both ministers agreed that deeper institutional collaboration would help harness Nigeria’s scientific potential and translate research outcomes into practical solutions for national development and security.

Senior officials present at the meeting included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, directors from both ministries, and other top officers.
