The state’s Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua confirmed the action on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He said the government acted swiftly after viewing the video, which depicts students allegedly dragging a peer by his suit and stomping on his chest while a third student recording the incident pleaded with them to stop.
“It is quite disturbing. When we saw the clips, we were wondering what could have warranted such behaviour,” Afegbua said. “There will be no justification for that kind of treatment. It is very unacceptable.”
According to the commissioner, the government expelled the students involved and has also directed the police to ensure they are arrested and prosecuted. Afegbua noted that he personally contacted the state Commissioner of Police to confirm that the investigation is proceeding and that parents of the students will be involved in bringing them forward for questioning.
The commissioner described the incident as a wake-up call for parents and teachers, emphasizing the need for stronger supervision and discipline in schools to prevent similar occurrences.
The Edo State Police Command had previously summoned the school management to hand over the students for investigation and possible prosecution. Meanwhile, the Edo State Ministry of Education has established a five-man investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify all students found culpable.
The video, which sparked widespread outrage on social media, has raised serious concerns among parents and the public about discipline in schools and the conduct of students.
