FG Declares Two-Day Eid Holiday, Mixed Reactions Trail Exclusion of Monday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday and Friday, March 19 and 20, as public holidays to mark the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant festivals in Islam.

The announcement was made by the Minister of the Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in an official statement issued on Tuesday, March 19, on behalf of the government.

Eid al-Fitr, observed by Muslims worldwide, signifies the conclusion of the holy month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. In his message, the minister extended warm greetings to the Muslim faithful across the country, urging them to uphold the core values of generosity, love, peace, and sacrifice that define the Ramadan period.

He emphasized the importance of sustaining these virtues beyond the festivities, noting their role in fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence.

However, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians. While many welcomed the two-day break, others expressed disappointment over the government’s decision not to extend the holiday through Monday, a move they believe would have allowed for a longer, more convenient celebration period.

The differing responses highlight ongoing public sentiment around holiday scheduling and work-life balance, especially during major religious celebrations.
