The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a strong warning to newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs), cautioning them against indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, and dereliction of duty.
Disu gave the charge on Monday in Abuja during the decoration ceremony for the newly elevated senior officers, stressing that their new ranks come with heightened responsibility and accountability.
“From this moment, you are no longer just senior officers; you are strategic leaders of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
“Your actions, decisions, and personal conduct must reflect discipline, integrity, and absolute respect for the rule of law.”
He warned that the Police Force would enforce zero tolerance for misconduct under their commands, urging them to take full responsibility for officers under their supervision.
“You must ensure zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty under your commands,” he said.
The IGP emphasized the importance of strict supervision and accountability, noting that weak oversight leads to misconduct while strong leadership sustains discipline.
“Lax supervision breeds misconduct; strong leadership enforces standards. I will hold you accountable for both operational outcomes and the behaviour of officers under your authority,” he added.
Disu reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to people-oriented policing, describing it as a core operational principle rather than an option. He urged senior officers to ensure policing remains professional, human rights–compliant, and responsive to citizens’ needs.
He further called for a shift toward visible, approachable, and accountable policing, noting that the era of disconnect between officers and the public must end.
“We must build trust deliberately and consistently. Intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and effective law enforcement are all strengthened when the public has confidence in us,” he said.
He also tasked the officers with driving internal reforms, innovation, and operational efficiency, while eliminating outdated practices that do not align with modern policing standards.
According to him, the promotions were the result of a merit-based process aimed at strengthening professionalism and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force.
He added that the officers earned their advancement through years of service and proven competence, stressing that the promotion should be viewed not as a reward, but as a greater responsibility to serve with integrity and accountability.
