Nigeria’s political and educational landscapes recorded significant developments on Monday as the Labour Party formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of a revised timetable for its internal congresses, while the Federal Government’s student loan initiative announced that more than ₦206 billion has been disbursed to support higher education across the country.
In an official communication dated March 3, 2026, and acknowledged by INEC on March 4, the leadership of the Labour Party informed the electoral commission of its decision to reschedule its ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention.
The correspondence, signed by the party’s National Chairman, Nenadi Esther Usman, and National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, explained that the adjustment followed INEC’s revised schedule of activities leading to the 2027 general elections.
According to the letter, the rescheduling is in compliance with provisions of the Electoral A ct 2026, relevant sections of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, and the party’s internal constitution.
Under the revised timetable, the party’s membership revalidation and new registration exercise is currently ongoing. Ward congresses have been fixed for March 26, 2026, followed by local government congresses on March 28, while state congresses will take place on March 31. The party’s national convention is scheduled for April 11, 2026.
The Labour Party leadership urged INEC to take note of the revised schedule and monitor the exercises nationwide as part of its statutory oversight of political party activities.
