The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into officers accused of misconduct and attempted extortion involving a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The corps member, identified as Devcharlezen, alleged that officers attached to Ladegboye Police Station in Ikorodu unlawfully stopped and detained him despite presenting his NYSC identity card. He further claimed that the officers demanded he log into the NYSC portal to verify his status and later attempted to extort $1,000 for his release.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the command has identified the officers involved and commenced disciplinary procedures in line with established regulations.
According to the command, two officers have been formally queried, while one has been defaulted pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities also commended the NYSC member for formally reporting the incident and cooperating with investigators.
The probe comes amid ongoing public scrutiny over police conduct and accountability, particularly in interactions with young Nigerians, including corps members carrying out their mandatory national service.
The Lagos Police Command assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and appropriate action taken where necessary.
