The University of Ibadan (UI) has directed 226 undergraduate students to withdraw from the institution due to poor academic performance, officials confirmed.
The decision followed a meeting of the university’s Senate, where results for the 2024/2025 academic session were ratified. Students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0 were instructed to leave, losing access to the school’s registration portal.
Affected students span all faculties and levels, from 100 to 500 level. The Faculty of Science recorded the highest number with 79 students, followed by Technology (45), Agriculture (35), Medicine and Education (18 each), Renewable Natural Resources (10), Arts (9), Economics and Management Sciences (4), Law (3), Veterinary Medicine (2), and Environmental Design and Management (3).
The university conducts this academic audit annually, a process informally dubbed the “tsunami.” In 2018, 408 students were similarly withdrawn. Fresh students resumed physical classes for the 2025/2026 session on Monday.
The university emphasizes that the measure aims to uphold academic standards and ensure students maintain satisfactory progress, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to excellence and accountability in higher education.
