The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral video in which a man identified as Shawama allegedly confessed to killing 32 people.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the Command has no record of the suspect ever being arrested by its operatives but is taking the claims seriously.
According to the police, a comprehensive investigation is already underway, with authorities deploying advanced tools such as digital forensics and digital footprint analysis to verify the authenticity of the claims and identify those involved.
“As a responsible and responsive agency, the Command has launched a thorough investigation into the allegations and the confessional statements contained in the video,” the statement read.
The Command also called on members of the public to assist with useful information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect and any accomplices.
“The Command further appeals to members of the public with information that can lead to the identification and arrest of Shawama or his accomplices to come forward and assist law enforcement in bringing them to justice,” Olayinka added.
The police assured that updates on the progress and outcome of the investigation would be communicated in due course.
In the widely circulated video, recorded in Yoruba, the individual identified as Shawama is heard claiming responsibility for multiple killings in Ibadan, stating, “When they wanted to misbehave in Ibadan, I killed 32.” He also alleged that security agencies had previously released and commended him for the acts.
The footage further showed other individuals expressing support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
