Nigeria’s electricity supply may witness noticeable improvement in the coming days as ongoing reforms in the power sector begin to deliver results, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has said.
Adelabu made this known on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during the first-quarter meeting of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) held in Lagos.
Details of the meeting were shared by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the agency responsible for regulating the country’s electricity market.
The minister stated that the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has recorded measurable progress in the power sector, including achieving what he described as the highest electricity generation levels in recent years.
“We have recorded improvements across key indices in the last three years. Our reforms are yielding results, even though they take time to fully materialise,” Adelabu said.
He attributed the anticipated improvement in electricity supply to recent repairs on previously damaged gas pipelines, noting that gas supply to thermal power plants is gradually increasing.
“I believe we are on a positive trajectory. The current challenges will soon ease, and within the next two weeks, we expect significant improvement as gas supply to power plants increases,” he added.
Adelabu also urged stakeholders across the power value chain to take greater responsibility and strengthen collaboration to address ongoing challenges in the sector.
“We must take ownership of the power sector. This is our country, and we must not be discouraged,” he said.
Chairman of NERC, Musiliu Oseni, commended the minister for sustained engagement with stakeholders, while the Commission’s Legal, Licensing and Compliance Commissioner, Dafe Akpeneye, acknowledged his efforts toward improving electricity supply.
The NESI comprises the entire electricity value chain in Nigeria, including generation companies, transmission infrastructure and distribution companies responsible for delivering power to consumers.
The quarterly meeting provides a platform for stakeholders to assess sector performance, address operational challenges and align strategies aimed at ensuring stable and reliable electricity supply across the country.
