The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed a viral screenshot purporting to show a tweet from former US President Donald Trump allegedly criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over security challenges in the North-East.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, took to X on Tuesday to label the post “Fake!!!” while sharing an image of the doctored tweet for clarity.
The fabricated message claimed that Trump criticized Tinubu for attending a state visit to the United Kingdom while suicide bombings struck Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday evening, and urged UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (note: UK PM, corrected) to intervene.
The clarification comes as Borno State continues to face intensified terrorist activity. On Monday, multiple suicide bombings linked to Boko Haram/ISWAP targeted crowded areas including markets, a post office, and other public facilities shortly after Iftar, resulting in at least 23 confirmed deaths and over 100 injuries.
President Tinubu, in a statement on Tuesday, described the attacks as “profoundly upsetting” and the “final desperate and frantic attempts” by terrorists facing sustained pressure from Nigerian security forces.
The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard false information circulating online and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to tackling terrorism while ensuring the safety and security of citizens.
