Rivers Assembly Rejects Four Commissioner Nominees, Clears Five from Fubara’s List

The Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected four commissioner nominees submitted by Siminalayi Fubara, following a screening exercise held on Monday in Port Harcourt.

During the session, lawmakers considered a list of nominees presented by the governor for appointment into the state executive council. At the end of the screening, five nominees were confirmed, while four others were rejected over various concerns raised by the Assembly.

Those confirmed by the lawmakers include Mr. Tonye Bellgam, Professor Temple Nwofor, Dr. Peters Nwagor, Mr. Lekue Kenneth, and Sir Amairigha Edward Hart.

However, the Assembly declined to confirm Professor Datonye Alasia, Mrs. Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, and Otonye TKD Amachree, citing different reasons for each decision.

According to the lawmakers, Professor Datonye Alasia was rejected due to what they described as “poor performance.” Alasia previously served as the Chief Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

In the case of Otonye TKD Amachree, the Assembly said the nominee faced multiple petitions from members of his community, alleging concerns over his involvement in community affairs. Lawmakers noted that more than 11 petitions were reportedly submitted against him.

Mrs. Charity Deemua was also not confirmed after she failed to present the required tax clearance documents, which lawmakers described as a mandatory requirement for the screening process.

Meanwhile, Tamuno Williams was stepped down by the Assembly over allegations that he misled the public regarding the activities of the legislature.

The screening forms part of the constitutional process through which the state legislature vets and approves nominees before they can be formally appointed into the state executive council.

The development highlights ongoing political dynamics within Rivers State, as the Assembly continues its oversight role in the formation of Governor Fubara’s cabinet.
