Thai Cargo Ship Targeted Near Strait of Hormuz as Regional Tensions Flare

A Thai-flagged cargo vessel was attacked while transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, according to Thai naval authorities and maritime reports.

The vessel, identified as the Mayuree Naree, was reportedly struck by an unknown projectile near its engine room, causing fire and damage that forced the evacuation of most of the crew. The Omani navy rescued 20 crew members, while three sailors remain missing as rescue operations continue.

The attack occurred amid heightened tensions in the region following a series of military exchanges involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel, and recent incidents targeting commercial shipping in the Strait. Authorities have not yet confirmed the responsible party, and Iranian officials have not publicly claimed direct involvement.

Thai naval statements confirmed the vessel sustained significant damage, but the situation is under investigation to determine the cause of the attack and identify those responsible. Maritime experts warned that such incidents threaten the safe passage of commercial shipping through the vital corridor that links the Persian Gulf to international waters.

“The crew of the Mayuree Naree were evacuated safely, but we are still accounting for three missing sailors. Investigations into the incident are ongoing,” said a Thai naval spokesperson.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of global oil supply passes, has become a flashpoint for regional instability, with commercial vessels increasingly at risk amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Shipping operators have been urged to exercise caution while navigating the area.
