UK Imposes Airspace Restrictions and Road Closures Ahead of President Tinubu’s State Visit

The United Kingdom is set to impose airspace restrictions, road closures, and heightened security measures in Windsor next week ahead of the state visit of Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who will be accompanied by his wife, Oluremi Tinubu.

President Tinubu’s visit, hosted by King Charles III, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 18, with a reception at Windsor Castle. Authorities said the security arrangements are part of standard protocols for visiting heads of state, designed to ensure public safety and the smooth execution of official engagements.

Thames Valley Police, in coordination with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Royal Household, and other security partners, announced that airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle normally in place year-round will be extended on March 18 from 7 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Chief Superintendent Adrian Hall, of Thames Valley Police’s Joint Operations Unit, described the air restrictions as one element of a comprehensive security operation. He emphasized that breaches of the restrictions would constitute a criminal offence under the Air Navigation Order, potentially resulting in arrest.

In addition to airspace measures, the force will deploy armed police, search teams, the Mounted Section, road policing units, and Project Servator officers across Windsor. An extensive CCTV network, hostile vehicle mitigation barriers, and other undisclosed security measures will also be in place to safeguard the event.

“Many of the security measures you will see and others you will not have been meticulously planned to ensure the safety of the state visit,” Hall said. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity via 101, or dial 999 in emergencies.

Temporary road closures and parking restrictions will take effect from Tuesday, March 17, potentially causing disruption in and around Windsor. Authorities advised commuters and residents to plan accordingly.

Thames Valley Police said the measures are built on their extensive experience policing royal events in Windsor, ensuring both security and minimal disruption while hosting international dignitaries.
