Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has declared his readiness to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying his experience in governance and infrastructure development equips him to tackle Nigeria’s challenges.
Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, the former Rivers State governor said he understands the country’s problems and possesses the capacity to solve them.
“I don’t care who else is running. I’m running because I’m a Nigerian candidate. I know the Nigerian problem, and I can solve it,” he said.
Amaechi pointed to projects executed during his tenure in public office including rail development and port reforms as evidence of his competence. He also claimed to have addressed insecurity while in government, insisting his track record distinguishes him from other aspirants.
A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Amaechi criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the nation’s economic conditions have deteriorated.
“Everybody is suffering. People can’t afford basic needs, transport costs are rising, and everything is skyrocketing,” he said, expressing dissatisfaction with current economic realities.
He further alleged efforts to weaken opposition parties, calling for the independence of key institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary.
Amaechi also expressed confidence in his party’s chances, stating that if the ADC fields a candidate in a credible contest, the ruling party could be unseated.
He joins other prominent political figures positioning for the 2027 race, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rauf Aregbesola.
INEC has scheduled the presidential election for January 16, 2027, with party primaries set to hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
