CBN Raises Alarm Over Cyber Scam Attempts Targeting Nigerians’ Bank Accounts

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians to remain vigilant amid rising cyberattack attempts aimed at gaining unauthorised access to personal and financial accounts.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, the apex bank disclosed that fraudsters are circulating fake emails and messages falsely claiming to originate from the institution.

According to the CBN, the misleading communications are designed to deceive recipients into clicking suspicious links and divulging sensitive personal information.

The bank noted that the fraudulent messages often contain false claims relating to its leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions, all aimed at creating panic and luring unsuspecting individuals into cyber traps.

“These messages are crafted to compromise personal data and gain access to individuals’ accounts,” the statement indicated.

The CBN urged the public to avoid engaging with such messages and to verify all official communications through its website or credible media channels.

“The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng. Members of the public are strongly advised to refrain from clicking links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites,” the statement read.

It also advised Nigerians to promptly report any suspected fraudulent emails, websites, or messages to law enforcement authorities.

Reaffirming its commitment to financial system security, the apex bank said it is strengthening its cybersecurity framework in collaboration with relevant agencies to combat digital fraud and protect citizens.
