Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday took former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, into custody shortly after proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
El-Rufai, who is currently standing trial over alleged corruption charges instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, had just concluded a hearing on his bail application when DSS operatives escorted him into a waiting vehicle and drove off, reportedly heading toward Abuja.
Security presence around the court premises had been notably heavy ahead of the hearing, fueling speculation about a possible re-arrest of the former governor. El-Rufai had arrived at the court at approximately 9:05 a.m. for the session.
Speaking with journalists after the proceedings, lead defence counsel, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, confirmed that arguments on the bail application had been fully taken.
“The bail application was argued and responded to, and the ruling has been fixed for April 14,” he stated.
The development adds a new twist to the ongoing legal battle, as attention now shifts to the court’s pending decision on the bail application.
