End of an Era: Tim Cook to Step Down as Apple CEO, John Ternus Takes Over

Tech giant Apple Inc. has announced a major leadership transition, with Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook set to step down after 15 years at the helm.

The company confirmed that Cook will hand over leadership to hardware chief John Ternus on September 1, 2026, following unanimous approval by Apple’s board.

Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, will remain in his role through the summer before transitioning to Executive Chairman. Current chairman Arthur Levinson is expected to become Lead Independent Director, while Ternus will also join the board.

Ternus, 50, joined Apple in 2001 as part of its product design team and steadily rose to become Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He has been instrumental in the development of several of the company’s flagship products, including the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods.

He also played a key role in Apple’s transition from Intel processors to its in-house silicon for Mac computers a move widely credited with boosting performance and improving battery efficiency.

The leadership shake-up comes at a pivotal moment for Apple as competition intensifies across the tech industry, particularly in artificial intelligence. The company has faced growing pressure to accelerate its AI capabilities, amid delays in upgrading its Siri assistant and increased reliance on external partnerships.

During Cook’s tenure, Apple significantly expanded its services division into a business generating over $100 billion annually. The company’s market value surged by an estimated $3.6 trillion, while revenue nearly doubled. Apple also recorded notable progress in reducing its product-related carbon emissions.

Ternus now steps into the top role at a critical juncture, as Apple looks to sustain its hardware dominance while navigating rapidly evolving demands in software and artificial intelligence.
