Legendary Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has etched his name deeper into global music history after becoming the first African artist to be inducted into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Fela will be honoured in the “Early Influence” category at this year’s induction, joining an elite list of music greats including Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Cuban icon Celia Cruz.
The announcement was made on Monday night in the United States during a broadcast linked to American Idol, unveiling this year’s class of inductees.
Also recognised in the “Performance” category is Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, further highlighting a strong African presence in this year’s honours.
Meanwhile, major global stars such as Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink were nominated but did not make the final induction list.
According to organisers, more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals participated in the voting process that determined the final honourees.
The induction ceremony is scheduled to hold on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, United States.
This latest milestone adds to Fela Kuti’s growing list of posthumous global recognitions. Earlier this year, he also became the first African musician to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
