NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake ‘Colgate’ Toothpaste in Circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the circulation of unapproved and potentially counterfeit toothpaste products falsely associated with Colgate.

In a statement issued via its official X platform, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a complaint concerning the products in Kaduna State, triggering an immediate investigation.

According to NAFDAC, the affected items identified as “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” do not meet regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, posing potential risks to public health.

Investigations revealed that the products lack critical identification features, including batch numbers and NAFDAC registration codes. Labels on the items claim they were manufactured by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with production dated August 2025 and expiry in August 2029.

A shop owner linked to the case reportedly stated that the products were sourced from a door-to-door distributor but could not provide proof of purchase.

NAFDAC confirmed that the suspected counterfeit products have been removed from circulation, while efforts are ongoing to track those responsible for their distribution. The agency has also directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and eliminate any remaining fake products in the market.

The regulator urged wholesalers, retailers, and consumers to remain vigilant by verifying the authenticity and physical condition of products before purchase or use.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send complaints via email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
