Nigeria’s Stability Critical to Regional Security, Says John Mahama

President John Mahama of Ghana has underscored the strategic importance of Nigeria’s stability to the broader security and economic balance of West Africa, warning that disruptions in Africa’s most populous nation could have far-reaching regional consequences.

Speaking at the African Heritage Awards 2026, Mahama highlighted the deep historical, economic, and demographic ties binding both countries, noting that Nigeria’s trajectory directly impacts Ghana and its neighbours.

“Nigeria is of key security interest to us,” he said. “When you have cousins like 250 million of them, you want them to do well so that one million of them do not come drifting towards a smaller country like Ghana.”

Emphasising the scale of Nigeria’s influence, Mahama added that he remains personally invested in the country’s progress. “Every day I wake up and pray for Nigeria—that God should help them get their act together,” he stated.

His remarks reflect growing regional awareness of Nigeria’s pivotal role in shaping economic stability, migration patterns, and security dynamics across West Africa. As Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, shifts within Nigeria often reverberate across neighbouring states, including Ghana.
