The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Jigawa State has provided free medical services to 757 residents during a one-day Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers held at the Chamo Primary Health Care Centre in Dutse.
The outreach, organised under the scheme’s Community Development Service (CDS), focused on vulnerable groups including pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants, and the elderly. Beneficiaries received diagnosis, treatment, and free medication during the exercise.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday, the NYSC State Coordinator, Bala Muhammad, described the initiative as a practical demonstration of the corps’ mandate to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.
He called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, health institutions, and corps members to sustain similar interventions, while commending participating medical personnel for their dedication.
The District Head of Chamo, represented by his secretary, Aminu Ibrahim, lauded the outreach, noting that many rural residents often travel long distances to access basic healthcare services.
“Our people rarely access this level of care without travelling far,” he said, appreciating NYSC and partners for the intervention.
Also speaking, the head of the health facility, Rabi’u Ali, said the large turnout highlighted the urgent need for more regular medical outreaches in rural communities.
“The turnout proves the need for regular outreaches in rural facilities like ours,” he said.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Chamo Ward Development Association, Adamu Idris, described the initiative as impactful and urged its expansion to other communities across the state.
“This is the kind of direct impact our ward needs,” he said, calling on government and private donors to support similar healthcare interventions.
