OAU Medical Student Dies After Collapsing Before Final Examination

A 400-level medical student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Adewole Emmanuel, has died after reportedly collapsing shortly before sitting for his final examination.

His death was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday, April 22, 2026, by the Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA), which described the incident as a devastating loss to the medical community.

The association said Emmanuel was a valued member of the faculty and a promising student whose academic journey was cut short unexpectedly.

“Under the cover of dark clouds, we write to you with the heaviest of hearts to inform you of the passing of one of our own, an integral part of the association and a solid pillar of his class,” the statement read.

It further described him as “a colleague, friend, roommate, and a Part 4 medical student with an undeniably bright future until the time of his passing,” adding that his death was “painful and heartbreaking” for the IFUMSA community.

The association also appealed for restraint in speculation, urging the public to respect the privacy of the bereaved family during this difficult period.

Meanwhile, a senior member of the association, who spoke anonymously, said Emmanuel was not known to have any underlying health condition prior to his death.

“He died yesterday. He had not been sick. He just collapsed and couldn’t be resuscitated,” the source said.

According to the source, the incident occurred while students were preparing for their final examination.

“We were about to write our final exam for the session when he suddenly collapsed in the college,” the source added. “It’s just unfortunate as he didn’t have any known medical condition. We have already contacted his family.”
