Obi Slams NBC Notice, Warns of Threat to Press Freedom and Nigeria’s Democracy

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has criticised a recent notice issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), warning that it poses a threat to press freedom and democratic governance in the country.

In a statement shared on his X handle on Tuesday, Obi said Nigeria risks “drifting dangerously” if democratic institutions are weakened instead of strengthened, especially at a time of growing national challenges.

“The recent notice by the National Broadcasting Commission… is very troubling,” he said.

Obi argued that the media should not be treated as an adversary by any government, particularly one that identifies with democratic values and pro-freedom ideals.

“A free and responsible media should not be an enemy to any administration, especially one that claims to have fought for democracy,” he stated.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the media plays a critical watchdog role in society and must be protected from intimidation or undue regulation.

“The media is the conscience of the nation. Attempting to stifle voices, moderate opinions, or intimidate journalists… only weakens our already fragile democracy,” he added.

He further noted that government institutions exist to serve the people, not to control narratives, urging authorities to shift focus toward addressing insecurity, economic hardship, and declining public trust.

“At a time when insecurity is on the rise… our focus should not be on controlling media narratives, but on delivering results,” Obi said.

Obi also expressed solidarity with media organisations across the country, calling for transparency, accountability, and institutional independence.

“I stand in solidarity with Nigeria’s media houses and broadcasters who are resisting any attempt to silence independent voices,” he said.

He concluded by warning that continued restrictions on press freedom could further undermine Nigeria’s democratic stability.
