Mikel Arteta has issued a passionate rallying cry to Arsenal, demanding “pure fire” from his players as they prepare for a decisive UEFA Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.
The Gunners head into Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium holding a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Lisbon, with a place in the semi-finals within reach for a second consecutive season.
However, Arsenal’s recent form has raised concerns. The narrow win in Portugal remains their only victory in the last four matches, with three defeats fuelling criticism that Arteta’s side are faltering under pressure as the season enters its decisive phase.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta dismissed any notion of fear and instead called for intensity and belief.
“There is no fear. Pure fire. That’s it. Me, the first one. Pure fire,” he declared. “I want to see that from the players, from everyone that energy, that desire. I’m on fire, and that’s the mentality we need.”
Recent setbacks have intensified scrutiny on the North London club. Arsenal suffered defeats in the League Cup final against Manchester City, the FA Cup quarter-final to second-tier Southampton, and a shock 2-1 Premier League loss at home to Bournemouth over the weekend.
Despite the dip, Arsenal remain firmly in the Premier League title race, sitting six points ahead of second-placed City, who have a game in hand ahead of a high-stakes clash between both sides on Sunday.
Arteta, whose team has finished runners-up in the league for the past three seasons, acknowledged the mounting pressure but insisted his squad is ready to rise to the occasion.
“We are in April with an incredible opportunity ahead of us. Let’s confront it and give absolutely everything,” he said. “What we are trying to achieve is difficult, but it’s supposed to be. We are chasing something this club has never done before.”
Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004 and are still searching for their first Champions League title. Reaching the semi-finals again would mark a historic step forward for a team aiming to break new ground under Arteta’s leadership.
