“‘Side Chicks Also Benefit’ — Mahama Sparks Debate Over Contractor Spending and Informal Economy”

Ghanaian President John Mahama has stirred public debate after highlighting the role of personal relationships including extramarital ones in the circulation of money following contractor payments.

Speaking on economic activity linked to government spending, Mahama noted that when contractors are paid, the funds often ripple across various sectors beyond formal business channels.

“When the contractors get paid, they go and buy a Land Cruiser for themselves, car dealers also benefit,” he said.

He went further to point out that such spending extends into personal relationships, including spouses and romantic partners outside marriage.

“And even their spouses, the wives, and the side chicks also benefit. Because when they are paid… they give their wives and side chicks some of the money,” he added.

Mahama explained that once these funds reach individuals, they quickly circulate through everyday services, indirectly supporting small businesses such as hairdressers, fashion designers, jewellery vendors, and handbag sellers.

According to him, this pattern reflects a broader informal economic chain driven by discretionary spending and personal networks an aspect of economic activity that is often overlooked in formal analyses.
