Governor Chukwuma Soludo has appointed Matthew Kukah as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), in a move aimed at strengthening leadership and academic standards at the institution.
The appointment was announced in Awka through a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime.
Bishop Kukah, a respected cleric and public intellectual, is widely known for his contributions to scholarship, governance discourse, and advocacy for social justice and interfaith harmony.
He received his early academic training in Philosophy and Theology at St. Augustine Major Seminary, Jos, and later earned a diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Ibadan. He went on to obtain a Bachelor of Divinity from the Pontifical Urban University, a Master’s degree in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford, and a PhD from SOAS University of London.
Kukah has also undertaken advanced studies at globally renowned institutions including the University of Oxford and Harvard University.
Beyond academia, he is the founder of the Kukah Centre, a platform known for research-driven engagement on governance, peacebuilding, and national development.
According to the state government, his appointment is expected to boost the university’s global outlook, strengthen partnerships, and promote ethical leadership, while advancing its mission to produce well-rounded graduates.
