A 37-year-old pastor has been arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl after convincing her family she was “possessed” and needed a river cleansing, authorities said.
The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Pastor Asonye Isaiah of the Rock of Love and Adoration Ground in Old Karshi. According to a statement by police spokesperson SP Ramhan Nansel on Sunday, the suspect exploited the trust of the victim’s aunt, claiming the teenager required urgent spiritual intervention at a river.
The aunt handed the girl over to Isaiah. Instead of performing any ritual, police say he took her to a hotel in New Karshi, where he raped her. He then allegedly threatened to kill her if she ever spoke of the attack.
The crime came to light when the girl’s guardian noticed sudden changes in her behaviour and questioned her. A medical examination later confirmed penile penetration.
“The suspect deceived the victim’s aunt, claiming her niece was ‘possessed’ and required cleansing at a river,” the police statement read. “He instead took the victim to a hotel… where he allegedly raped her.”
Isaiah was arrested on April 18, 2026, following a complaint at the Karshi Divisional Headquarters. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the offence and pleaded for leniency.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for full prosecution.
