“There’s Only One Buju” — Fat Joe, Buju Banton Revisit Naming Clash That Forced Nigerian Singer BNXN to Rebrand

American rapper Fat Joe and Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton have revisited the controversy surrounding Nigerian singer BNXN, formerly known as “Buju,” shedding new light on the name dispute that led to his rebranding.

Speaking during a recent conversation, Fat Joe recalled his past criticism of the Nigerian artist’s use of the name, insisting it belonged solely to Buju Banton.

“Yeah, Buju, you know, it was the guy in Africa… I dissed him on TV. There’s only one Buju Banton. I told him I don’t play that,” Fat Joe said.

Buju Banton, in his response, explained that his stage name carries deep personal and cultural meaning, originally inspired by his mother and his admiration for reggae and dancehall pioneer Burro Banton.

He also noted that the emergence of another artist using a similar name created confusion in the digital space, particularly with streaming algorithms and global search systems.

“So when a young man came and said the name Buju, I knew the problem it would cause. The algorithms started getting confused,” he said. “We had to regulate that and make sure a new identity was created.”

The overlap in names and growing international attention eventually pushed the Nigerian singer to adopt a new stage name, BNXN, to avoid further conflict and brand confusion.
