President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has carried out a minor cabinet reshuffle, removing Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and appointing Taiwo Oyedele as his successor.
Oyedele, who previously served as Minister of State for Finance, has now been elevated to the substantive role of Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Edun has been directed to formally hand over his responsibilities to him.
In a related development, the President also relieved Ahmed Musa Dangiwa of his duties as Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been named as the ministerial nominee and minister-designate for the ministry.
The changes were disclosed in an official statement issued on Tuesday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. The statement confirmed that both outgoing ministers are to exit the cabinet, while the newly appointed officials assume their respective roles.
According to the directive, all handover processes are to be concluded on or before the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026. In the interim, Dangiwa is to hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry pending the confirmation of his successor.
Explaining the rationale behind the reshuffle, Akume stated that the President’s decision is intended to strengthen coordination within the cabinet, enhance synergy in governance, and accelerate the delivery of economic benefits to Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He further noted that the action is in line with the President’s constitutional powers as provided under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service and wished them success in their future pursuits, while also assuring that efforts to revitalise governance will remain ongoing.
