Tragedy in Ekiti: BOUESTI Mourns as Three Die in Post-Convocation Hotel Stampede

The management of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of three persons in a stampede that occurred during a post-convocation celebration at a hotel in the town.

In a statement issued on Monday, Registrar Mrs Funmilola Adeusi confirmed that two graduates and one student lost their lives in the tragic incident, which happened during a night party at the Emirate Hotel Ikere-Ekiti.

The university explained that its second convocation ceremony, held on Saturday, was peaceful and successfully concluded on campus, but some graduates later organised an independent celebration off-campus where the incident occurred.

According to the statement, the tragedy unfolded after a reported altercation broke out at the hotel, which escalated into a stampede, leading to the loss of lives.

“Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time,” Adeusi said, adding that the university community was deeply saddened by the incident.

She further clarified that the convocation itself was conducted without any disruption on campus, stressing that the university was not responsible for events held outside its premises.

“The unfortunate incident took place at a private off-campus location where some graduands independently organised a night party to celebrate their graduation,” she said.

The institution reiterated its commitment to maintaining safety and order during official activities while distancing itself from off-campus events.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has launched an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu confirmed that the stampede occurred around 1 a.m. following a reported fight at the venue.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, has ordered a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
