Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has sparked fresh political discussion after alleging that Islam’s global reputation has deteriorated under the Tinubu/Shettima administration.
Speaking at a Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) event in Abuja, Baba-Ahmed said it was difficult for him to make the statement but insisted it was necessary.
“Listen carefully. It’s not easy for me to say this, but it must be said,” he told the gathering.
He argued that the worldwide perception of Islam has suffered significant reputational damage during the current government. According to him, “The world of Islam has never suffered reputational damage like it has under the Tinubu-Shettima presidency.”
He further stated that Muslim-led countries in history had been associated with “peace, tranquillity, and justice.”
Baba-Ahmed also referenced past leaders such as Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein, acknowledging their controversies but claiming they recorded notable achievements in human development. “Besides the human rights abuses, they have established records that are yet unsurpassed,” he said.
He clarified that his remarks were not based on religion but on leadership quality. “This is not about religion. If you are bringing a Christian, we want a genuine Christian. If you are bringing a Muslim, we want a genuine Muslim,” he added.
