Dua Lipa Slams Samsung With $15 Million Lawsuit Over Alleged Unauthorized Photo Use

Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung in a California court, accusing the tech giant of unlawfully using her image to promote television sales in the United States.

According to court documents filed on Friday, the pop star alleged that Samsung engaged in the “massive, continuing, unauthorized commercial exploitation” of her likeness by featuring her photograph on packaging for high-definition televisions.

The lawsuit includes an image of a Samsung TV box displaying multiple photos on the television screen, with the most prominent image showing part of Dua Lipa’s face.

The photograph in question, titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is reportedly registered with the U.S. Copyright Office and is claimed to belong exclusively to the singer.

Samsung had not issued an official response at the time of filing the lawsuit.

In the legal filing, Dua Lipa’s attorneys highlighted her carefully managed commercial image and high-profile partnerships with major luxury and lifestyle brands. These include ambassadorial and campaign collaborations with Puma, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Porsche, Apple, Chanel, Nespresso, Bvlgari and Tiffany & Co..

The complaint stated that the singer is “highly selective” about the endorsements and sponsorships she accepts and would not have approved the use of her image in connection with the products identified in the lawsuit.

The suit reportedly outlines eight civil claims against Samsung, including copyright infringement, false endorsement and violation of publicity rights.

Dua Lipa is seeking a permanent court injunction to stop the alleged infringement, alongside damages of no less than $15 million, as well as punitive compensation.
