Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Bolaji Ogunmola, has spoken candidly about the difficulties filmmakers face while producing movies for YouTube, noting that the platform was never originally built for film distribution.
In a recent interview, Ogunmola explained that creating content for YouTube audiences comes with huge financial risks despite the perception that producers earn massive profits from high view counts.
According to her, film production remains an expensive venture, especially with the rising fees charged by actors.
“YouTube was never designed for films. Film is a very expensive art. Actors are collecting between N4 million and N5 million for just four days of work. The least could be N1 million to N2 million,” she said.
The actress also appealed to Nigerians to offer constructive criticism to YouTube filmmakers rather than harsh condemnation, stressing that every production requires significant investment regardless of its quality.
She noted that even movies considered poor by viewers still cost substantial money to produce.
Ogunmola further stated that Nigeria appears to be one of the few countries heavily relying on YouTube movies due to the nation’s weak film distribution structure.
