The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his claim that he will not secure up to 10% of votes in Rivers State in the next general elections.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, had said that Atiku and the ADC would perform poorly in the 2027 elections in the South-South state.
He made the comment at a luncheon on Saturday held in honour of candidates of the Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, where he also insisted that his coalition’s governorship candidate would win the election.
Reacting through a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said voters in Rivers State are intelligent enough to decide who they want to support without being told.
He added that no one, no matter how powerful or connected to federal authority, has the right to decide how an entire state will vote. He also said Wike’s comments show fear within the ruling political circle over the growing strength of the opposition coalition under the ADC.
Atiku further said Nigerians are more worried about rising living costs, insecurity, and economic hardship than political predictions from leaders who, according to him, have shifted focus away from governance.
