IGP Disu: FCT Police Lost 140 Officers to Attacks, Accidents in One Year

Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has revealed that no fewer than 140 police officers lost their lives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) within a year, highlighting the dangers officers face while carrying out their duties.

Disu made the disclosure during an interactive session with members of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) in Abuja. He said policing in Nigeria has become more demanding than ever, with officers often working long hours to respond to the country's growing security challenges.

According to the IGP, the traditional shift system is no longer realistic in today's policing environment. He explained that many officers now work beyond regular hours and under difficult conditions to keep communities safe.

“Last year alone, the FCT Police Command lost about 140 officers through violent attacks, accidents and other duty-related incidents,” he said, noting that many personnel continue to make significant sacrifices, including giving up their comfort and time with family, in service to the nation.

Despite the pressures of the job, Disu said the Force remains committed to professionalism and accountability. He stressed that officers found guilty of misconduct would be dealt with in line with the law, while those carrying out their duties responsibly deserve public support and protection.

The police chief also called for stronger cooperation between the media and the Force, describing journalists as important partners in promoting security. He urged responsible reporting of security issues and warned against the careless circulation of police-related videos, saying such content can sometimes create false impressions and affect ongoing operations. Earlier, CCAN Chairman, Festus Fifen, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to factual and balanced reporting, noting that crime correspondents have a role to play in building a safer society.
