Kebbi South Senator Joins ADC, Cites APC Internal Crisis

Senator Garba Maidoki, who represents Kebbi South Senatorial District, has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attributing his decision to unresolved internal disagreements stemming from the party’s recent primary elections in Kebbi State.

Maidoki announced his defection in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The senator currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and also holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation.

The lawmaker was among several aspirants reportedly disqualified from participating in the APC primaries conducted in Kebbi State.

Explaining the reasons behind his decision, Maidoki said he reached the conclusion after holding extensive consultations with stakeholders and constituents across his senatorial district.

According to him, the APC continues to face a lingering internal crisis in Kebbi State, particularly arising from the conduct and outcome of the party’s primary elections.

He stated that after careful consultation with his constituents, he decided to align with the ADC, which he believes better represents the interests and aspirations of the people he serves.

Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau appealed to Maidoki to reconsider his decision and remain in the ruling party.

Barau argued that the disagreements within the Kebbi APC were not severe enough to warrant defection and could be resolved through dialogue and reconciliation.

He described the situation as a family dispute and urged the senator to suspend his move to allow room for peace efforts within the party.

Despite the appeal, Maidoki stood by his decision, maintaining that he had resolved to leave the APC.

The senator’s defection follows his earlier resignation from the party in May, ahead of the APC senatorial primary election.

He formally communicated his resignation in a letter dated May 14, 2026, addressed to the APC Ward Chairman of Rafin Zuru Ward in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Maidoki’s move adds to the growing number of politicians abandoning the APC for the ADC as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The trend has largely been linked to dissatisfaction over party primaries, internal disputes and disagreements within the ruling party.
