Meta has confirmed that the official Obama White House Instagram account was hacked, leading to the publication of unauthorised posts and stories before access to the page was restored and the content removed.
The incident was first noticed on Sunday when the account, @obamawhitehouse, began posting unusual content, including an AI-generated image and a false claim suggesting that the “White House is under Shiites’ control.”
Hackers also shared a series of unauthorised Instagram Stories during the breach, which briefly went live and drew attention from followers before they were quickly taken down.
Meta said the account has since been secured and all the unauthorised posts deleted, although the company did not reveal how the attackers gained access.
The affected page is the official archival account of the Obama White House and is separate from former President Barack Obama’s personal Instagram account. Its last verified post was made on January 20, 2017, the day of Donald Trump’s first inauguration.
The company added that investigations into the breach are ongoing, while the identity of those responsible has not yet been established.
