Nigerian rapper CDQ has alleged that powerful cabals, gangs, and cult groups now wield significant influence within the country's music industry, making it difficult for independent artists to succeed without affiliations.
Speaking during an interview with content creator JBrandy, the ‘Nowo Soke’ hitmaker claimed that many artists are pressured to align themselves with specific groups before they can receive meaningful support or opportunities in the industry.
According to CDQ, the music business has gradually evolved into a system where belonging to a particular caucus, gang, or cult often determines the level of assistance an artist receives. He suggested that talent alone is no longer enough for many musicians to thrive.
The rapper noted that artists who have managed to achieve success without joining any gang or cult group should consider themselves fortunate. He attributed such achievements to divine favor, given what he described as the current realities of the industry.
CDQ further claimed that musicians who refuse to associate with these groups may end up investing heavily in their careers without getting the desired results or recognition. He argued that the lack of such connections can create significant barriers to progress.
He therefore urged artists, record label executives, and other stakeholders in the entertainment sector to discourage the growing link between gangsterism and the music business. CDQ stressed the need for reforms that would allow talent and hard work to determine success rather than group affiliations.
