Okpebholo Nominates Second Non-Indigene for Commissioner Position

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has nominated Martin Anayochukwu Oli as a commissioner-designate, making him the second non-indigene to be appointed into his administration.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, who said the nomination underscores the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and equal representation.

According to the statement, which was conveyed by the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Umar Ikhilor, Oli’s nomination reflects Governor Okpebholo’s determination to ensure that all communities residing in Edo State are adequately represented in government.

The statement noted that Oli, a businessman and community leader from Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, follows the appointment of Hon. Abdulkarim Kadiri, a respected leader of the Hausa-Fulani community in Edo State, who was named Special Adviser on Community Matters in November 2024.

It stated, “The governor has once again demonstrated his commitment to inclusive governance by nominating Mr. Martin Anayochukwu Oli, a businessman and community leader from Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, as Commissioner-designate in Edo State.

“Mr. Oli’s nomination is the second major appointment involving a non-Edo ethnic group since Governor Okpebholo assumed office, following the appointment of Hon. Abdulkarim Kadiri, a respected Hausa-Fulani community leader in Edo State, as Special Adviser on Community Matters in November 2024.

“This reflects the Governor’s vision of building an administration that recognises the contributions of every resident, regardless of ethnic origin.”

Ebojele explained that Edo State is home to several ethnic communities, including the Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba and others, whose economic, cultural and social contributions have significantly supported the state's development.

He added that Oli’s nomination demonstrates the governor’s resolve to build a government where people from diverse backgrounds can actively participate in governance and contribute to policy formulation.

The statement further described Oli as an experienced entrepreneur and grassroots community advocate who has earned recognition within Edo’s Igbo community through various development initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities.

According to Ebojele, the appointment highlights the administration’s emphasis on competence, dedication and community service in selecting public office holders.

Oli’s nomination will now be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation in accordance with constitutional provisions.
