Outrage in Anambra as Police Arrest Landlord Over Nursing Student’s Murder, Nab Kidnap Suspect in Adamawa

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a landlord, Ogochukwu Ugoeze, in connection with the killing of 23-year-old nursing student Chiamaka Vivian Chilaka. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, occurred at her residence in Idemili South Local Government Area on June 14, 2026. Chilaka was a multi-award-winning final-year National Diploma (ND II) student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor.

A video circulating online showed a visibly distraught priest at the scene, directing that photographs be taken inside the deceased’s room, where a stick was reportedly found. The footage also captured the victim’s body lying outside with visible injuries, including cuts on her thighs, while bloodstains, broken items and scattered belongings suggested a violent struggle before her death.

Residents of the area alleged that the landlord had repeatedly sexually harassed the student, claims she reportedly rejected on several occasions. Although the suspect initially told police that unknown persons invaded the compound and attacked the victim, neighbours questioned his account, noting that a dog in the premises would normally alert occupants to intruders.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a detailed investigation. The police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and is being interrogated, while the victim’s body has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.
