Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that he has personally experienced stereotyping, prejudice and labelling because of his Igbo ethnic background. He made the disclosure while condemning the growing trend of linking criminal activities to specific ethnic groups in Nigeria.
In a post on X, Obi said his experience is not unique to the Igbo people, stressing that many Nigerians have at various times been judged based on their ethnicity rather than their individual character. According to him, such generalisations are harmful and fail to reflect the true identity of individuals.
The former Anambra State governor also expressed sympathy for ordinary Fulani citizens who are often unfairly blamed for crimes committed by a few individuals. He noted that many of those being judged have no connection to the criminals and do not support their actions, yet they continue to face suspicion because of their ethnic background.
Obi insisted that criminality should never be associated with any ethnic group, emphasizing that offenders should be identified by their actions alone. He stated that “a thief is a thief, a terrorist is a terrorist, and a kidnapper is a kidnapper,” adding that criminals are bad actors who must be apprehended and punished according to the law.
Drawing parallels with the civil rights movement in the United States, Obi referenced Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous call for people to be judged by the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin. He argued that Nigeria’s ethnic groups are known for their diverse traditions, occupations, skills and contributions, while crime itself has no ethnic identity.
He urged Nigerians to reject the practice of blaming entire communities for the actions of a few individuals, warning that such attitudes fuel division, hatred and mistrust. Obi called for greater appreciation of the country’s cultural diversity and renewed commitment to justice, mutual respect, national unity and social cohesion.
