Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly attacked a Nigerian Army base along the Mandara–Buratai Road in Borno State, leaving at least eight soldiers dead and several others injured.
The attack was said to have occurred around 4 a.m. on Friday during heavy rainfall, when the militants allegedly stormed the position of the 162 Battalion, taking troops by surprise.
A military source at the base confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers struck while it was raining heavily. “They attacked us at 4 a.m. today when it was raining. Eight soldiers were killed in action,” the source said.
Another source within the military claimed the assailants overran parts of the facility during the raid and carried out a brutal assault on troops stationed there, alleging that some of the slain soldiers were beheaded while others sustained injuries.
The attackers were said to have arrived in large numbers, taking advantage of the poor weather conditions to launch the coordinated surprise offensive. Following the incident, reinforcement troops were reportedly deployed to the area to stabilise the situation.
Security sources added that efforts were ongoing to assess the full extent of casualties and damage to the base. The attack comes amid renewed assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters on military formations in Nigeria’s North-East, even as counterinsurgency operations continue. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military had yet to issue an official statement.
