Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Scotland captain and former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson on a free transfer, bringing an end to his nine-year spell at Anfield.
The 32-year-old left-back will officially join Tottenham on July 1, after the expiration of his Liverpool contract. He is expected to link up with the squad ahead of the new domestic season in August.
Robertson had previously come close to a move to Tottenham in January, but Liverpool blocked the transfer after they were unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma. However, with Roberto De Zerbi now in charge at Tottenham, the deal has been revived and approved.
Speaking on the signing, De Zerbi said Robertson’s experience and leadership qualities make him a valuable addition to the squad, describing him as a proven winner who can contribute both on and off the pitch. He added that the defender’s technical ability and mentality will strengthen the team significantly.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange also praised the move, calling Robertson one of the Premier League’s best-ever left-backs and highlighting his professionalism, character, and winning mentality. He said the Scotland international’s leadership would be important for the development of the squad.
Robertson, who will compete with Destiny Udogie for the left-back position, is currently with Scotland preparing for the World Cup. In a video message, he expressed excitement about joining Tottenham and playing in front of the fans, adding that he is already looking forward to the new season. During his time at Liverpool, Robertson won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and one FA Cup, and was part of the club’s 2019 UEFA Champions League-winning team.
