Nice forward Elye Wahi has been cleared to continue his World Cup participation after a brief visa delay linked to ongoing scrutiny over his alleged involvement in a spot-fixing case in France.
The 23-year-old, who started in Sunday’s World Cup win over Ecuador, is reportedly under investigation over accusations that he deliberately received a yellow card while playing for Nice against Metz in a Ligue 1 match in May.
Wahi was reportedly arrested last month ahead of the tournament in connection with the alleged spot-fixing incident, though he has not been formally convicted of any offence and continues to deny wrongdoing.
His participation in the competition had been in doubt after Canadian authorities delayed his visa approval, requesting further information regarding his legal situation before eventually granting clearance.
The International Federation of Football (FIF) later confirmed on Thursday that the necessary authorisations for his entry into Canada had been secured, allowing him to travel with the Ivory Coast squad for their second Group E match.
In its statement, FIF said Wahi would continue his involvement in the tournament “as normal” and expressed appreciation to the relevant authorities for resolving the issue and enabling the player to remain with the team.
