Fresh details have emerged on the security operation that secured the freedom of the abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, with the Presidency revealing that eight suspected kidnappers have been arrested while several others were neutralised during the rescue mission.
President Bola Tinubu's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the operation not only led to the safe rescue of the victims after 56 days in captivity but also dealt a significant setback to the criminal group responsible for the abduction.
According to him, security operatives pursued the kidnappers during the operation, leading to the arrest of eight members of the gang. The suspects have since been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for investigation and possible prosecution.
Onanuga also stated that some members of the kidnapping syndicate were neutralised during the operation as security personnel engaged the criminals while working to secure the release of the captives.
He said the outcome of the operation reflects the coordinated efforts of the various security agencies involved in tracking the abductors and bringing the prolonged ordeal of the victims to an end.
"In the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised," Onanuga said.
The rescue operation brought to a close the 56-day captivity of the pupils and teachers who were abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, an incident that sparked widespread concern across the country.
The successful operation has been widely viewed as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat kidnapping and improve the safety of schools and communities across Nigeria.
Authorities have indicated that investigations are continuing as security agencies intensify efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network linked to the abduction.
