Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Workers’ Welfare, Infrastructure Development

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to enacting policies that safeguard the rights, welfare, and security of maritime workers across the country.

In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by his Media and Communications Adviser, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day, Oyetola acknowledged the critical role of maritime workers in national development.

International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is observed annually on May 1 to honour workers’ rights and recognise their contributions to socio-economic progress.

The minister emphasised that the Ministry remains committed to investing in infrastructure, technology, and training to boost productivity and improve working conditions in the maritime sector. “Today, I join millions of Nigerians in saluting the unwavering spirit and industriousness of our maritime workers — from seafarers and dockworkers to port administrators and regulators,” Oyetola said.

He noted that the maritime industry is central to Nigeria’s economic framework and vital to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He praised the workers for their resilience and dedication, acknowledging that the smooth functioning of the nation’s ports and inland waterways is a direct result of their commitment.

Oyetola further assured stakeholders that the Ministry is focused on building a modern, secure, and vibrant maritime sector that promotes job creation, innovation, and national development.

He called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, labour unions, and private sector partners to ensure the maritime workforce remains competitive, well-supported, and prepared for future challenges.
