A Magistrate’s Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of 21-year-old carpenter Anthony Alabi at the Olokuta Correctional Centre over the alleged murder of 58-year-old Veronica Olaseni.
Alabi was arraigned on a two-count charge of murder and theft. During proceedings, he admitted to engaging in sexual activity with the deceased, stating, “I didn’t want her body to waste, so I had intercourse with her corpse.”
The presiding magistrate, Temitope Adurota, declined to take his plea, explaining that the court lacks jurisdiction in the matter. Alabi was remanded pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Folashade Adebayo, the incident occurred on March 2, 2026, around 2:30 p.m., at Iboropa-Akoko in Akoko North-East Local Government Area. The prosecutor said Alabi allegedly strangled the victim on her farm after she recognized him while he was attempting to steal.
The prosecution added that Alabi reportedly stole an Infinix phone worth N150,000, a cutlass valued at N10,000, and an Access Bank ATM card belonging to the deceased.
Alabi, who was not represented by a lawyer, reportedly told the court that he went to the farm intending to steal cashew nuts but attacked the woman after she identified him.
The case file has been forwarded to the DPP, and the matter has been adjourned to June 6 for mention.
