Amazon Reports Cloud Service Disruptions in UAE and Bahrain Amid Regional Tensions

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon, has reported service disruptions at its data centres in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain, following incidents in the region linked to heightened geopolitical tensions.

According to AWS, the issues began after unidentified objects struck a facility in the UAE, triggering a fire and temporary power shutdown early Sunday. Local fire crews intervened, cutting power to the affected area to contain the incident. The disruption in the UAE also caused connectivity and power problems in neighbouring Bahrain, affecting AWS’s ME‑CENTRAL‑1 region.

AWS has advised customers to rely on services in other regions while the company works to restore full functionality, with recovery expected to take several hours or more.

The outages coincide with recent retaliatory missile and drone strikes by Iran on Gulf state infrastructure, following prior actions by the United States and Israel. While AWS has not directly linked the disruption to the strikes, the timing has raised concerns over the vulnerability of critical cloud infrastructure amid regional conflicts.

The outage has reportedly affected compute and networking services, with some banking applications and digital platforms in the UAE experiencing interruptions.

This incident underscores the broader risks faced by cloud services in conflict-prone regions and highlights the importance of resilient infrastructure for businesses and financial institutions reliant on digital platforms.
