Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi could face disciplinary action from the English Football Association following his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest F.C.’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur F.C. on Sunday.
Awoniyi came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, sealing an important win for the club in its fight to avoid relegation. However, the celebration that followed has now drawn attention beyond the pitch.
In celebrating the goal, the Nigerian forward removed his shirt, an action that resulted in an automatic yellow card. Underneath, he revealed a message that read: “God is the greatest.”
The display has raised concerns under Law 4 of the International Football Association Board, which prohibits players from showing political, religious, or personal messages on their clothing or undergarments during matches.
The regulation provides that such actions may attract sanctions beyond an in-game caution, with possible disciplinary measures from competition organisers, national football associations, or even FIFA.
As a result, Awoniyi may now face further punishment despite his important contribution to Nottingham Forest’s victory.
