Benin Palace Disowns Streamer Peller’s Visit, Insists No Approval Was Granted

The Benin Traditional Council has firmly denied granting approval to popular streamer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, for his recent visit to the Palace of the Oba of Benin, describing the move as “unauthorised” and contrary to established protocol.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor, clarified that while a letter requesting the visit may have been submitted and acknowledged, such action does not amount to official approval.

“The attention of the Benin Traditional Council has been drawn to reactions trailing its earlier statement on the unauthorised and abominable visit to the Palace by Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja and his manager,” Irabor said.

He stressed that in any formal institution, the submission and acknowledgement of a request letter only confirm receipt and do not signify consent.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the receipt and stamping of correspondence by the council’s secretariat is merely an administrative process. It does not imply approval by His Royal Majesty or the Benin Traditional Council. Without explicit authorisation, no visit or activity is deemed sanctioned,” he added.

The council challenged Peller and his management to publicly clarify whether they received any formal written approval for the visit. It also questioned whether their initial request disclosed any intention to visit the Iloi (Queens), an issue now central to the controversy.

Irabor further revealed that the matter is currently undergoing internal disciplinary review. He confirmed that Peller has been invited to the palace, while the council refrains from further public engagement as the process unfolds.

“As previously communicated, issues arising from the unauthorised visit are being handled through appropriate internal channels. The council will not be drawn into public discourse on the matter at this time,” he said.

Reaffirming its stance, the council emphasised its commitment to preserving the customs, traditions, and sanctity of the Benin Royal Palace.

The development follows an earlier report indicating that a palace queen accused of facilitating the visit could face possible removal as part of ongoing disciplinary measures.
